I used two different types of film for these 35mm photos I took during the late winter early spring months. I tried out the LomoChrome Purple color negative and the Metropolis which has been my standard Lomo Apparat film of choice to shoot on.
The locations for these photos are from both my neighborhood of Falls Church Va and a March trip to Asheville NC. I love the gradient value of the mountains from the Asheville shots, especially with the purple negative film.
Part of my summer morning shoots have been stopping by some old buildings in Falls Church that are likely not long for this world. It’s been happening for a while as new development in crowded areas does. But, I also wanted to capture the area as I have known it since moving to Northern Virginia from DC and Maryland before it’s all new buildings, something I never did in Hyattsville where I grew up.

Mansion on a Hill
I discovered this little store this winter as it was on my route to physical therapy. It sits right next to a gas station and has that early 80’s southern California aesthetic in its architecture.
Matt’s Tailor & Bridal Boutique. This building and the mannequins in the window have been here for years, ever since I first remember coming through Falls Church. The building sits by itself across from where I get my film developed.
Irvin Building, 1963, Falls Church VA. I wanted to get over to this one before it got torn down but because of my leg I was too late. A window is smashed and the fence is up. I wish they kept the structure of this one around, it looks like what would have been a commercial Mid-Century design (someone can check me on this).
MVC, Falls Church VA. The MVC sits right next to the Irvin building. The morning I went and got the shot of Irvin I noticed there were no cars or trucks around which set up the perfect angle for this building. It looks sad, it doesn’t look like fun sex toys and videos. Relic of its time still kicking or erm humping.
Hole in the Wall Books and Lederer’s Sound, Falls Church, VA. Hole in the Wall was the best used book store around when I first moved to this area. You could spend hours in this cramped floor to ceiling bookstore with the permeating smell of old books seared into your nose.
Lederer’s Sound from the front. I always loved how this little shop looks. The windows, the scripted sign over the door and the bushes. It screams small town music shop. If I had money I’d turn it into one. I love these little shops along 7 because they give Falls Church the quaint vibe that people love about living here.
Virginia Beach, VA. My mom had back surgery on my birthday. I drove down to be with my parents and stayed overnight at an older hotel. It still had old phones and tables. I tried to channel my inner Eggleston on this one but the lighting didn’t quite turn out.
Reflections, Lake Barcroft, VA. Once I got off my crutches I was able to start taking walks (before I could skate again). You have no idea how much fun it is to take walks after not being able to for 4 months.
Bouquet. Flowers past their prime on the mantle. The natural light caught all the shadows I wanted here. The Lomo lens blurs the rough edges out which also lends an interesting flatness to the photo.
